Sailed from Great Britain on the ship "Thornton" arriving in New York 4 May 1856. Travelled in the James G. Willies Handcart Co., was caught in a terrible snowstorm, rescued, and arrived in Great Salt Lake (Deseret now Utah) on 9 Nov 1856. Helped to dig the grave at Rock Creek for 13 people who died the night before the rescue party arrived.

The marriage information used is the one given on the birth records of their two youngest children: on 8 Jun 1838 in Kilbarchan (Renfrew County). These children were the only ones born after 1855 when it became mandatory to register births, etc. Another record is found on FHL #1,041,090 Frame2854 which is 19 May 1838 Paisley, Abbey Parish, Renfrew, Scotland and Michael's name is listed as Mitchell. It was a common practice at this time for banns to be posted in both the bride's and the groom's parishes. These places are close together.
